Don had done the work at Big Sand Mound without me today, and had gotten a western hognose. He thought it would be cool to see both an eastern and a western hog on the same calendar day in Iowa, so Laura and I met up with him to make it happen.
It didn't take long, Eastern Hognose Snake (Heterodon platirhinos)
and another...
and two more...
and another...
and another...
and a cool hog tunnel...
and another...
Yeah, that was seven eastern hogs in the span of an hour or so, we also had one slip down a burrow before we could get a photo. It was pretty amazing. Then we flipped a cover object and it had three massive Bullsnakes (Pituophis catenifer sayi)
We didn't mess with then long, just grabbed this quick in hand shot and put them back under the cover. One was very black in color, with very little yellow. It was not a typical looking Iowa bullsnake. It was a fun quick trip, but now I wanted to catch both hogs in Iowa on the same day.
